What is The Purple Door?
The Purple Door is a jewelry and accessories business that we started in 2005. The goal was simple: get girlfriends together and offer them fabulous jewelry at fabulous prices. This business came to be during a time of transition in my family’s life. My husband, Scott, had just taken a promising new job opportunity; and after years of working outside the home, I decided to stay home with our two children who were ages two and four at the time. After many months of our new situation, two important things became clear: First, my husband’s new job was not working out as we had hoped; and second, although being a full-time stay at home mom was rewarding, I wanted more.
So together, Scott and I came up with a new plan for our family. I was very picky about what our new plan would involve. As a former business owner. I did not want to work for someone else. I also wanted to do something that was fun, flexible, part-time, from home and financially rewarding. Many people laughed at my list of job requirements thinking I was asking for too much. But each of those requirements was too important to me to sacrifice. I realized the only choice I had was to make it all happen. And one thing I have learned since starting this business is that you can make anything happen when you decide to do it. My experience in retail has taught me that most all women love to buy jewelry (I know I do!). It can be such a small purchase but it has the amazing ability to make you feel a little better about yourself—a little more confident. And my experience as a bargain shopper has taught me that not only do women love a great deal, but they love to SHARE a great deal.
So The Purple Door began. I started selling fabulous, fun jewelry at great prices—almost everything in our line is under $50.00 and most items are $20.00 or less. At those prices women can buy a gift for someone and still be able to buy something for themselves without having to spend too much money. We love that! After six months of selling jewelry in my spare time, my husband and I knew that we could do this business together, provide for our family and still be able to raise our kids ourselves. We had to go for it. It was a little crazy and a lot scary, but we took a leap of faith and moved our family to Hendersonville, TN, just outside Nashville, and made The Purple Door our only source of income.
The Purple Door has taken off and has grown much larger than we ever could have imagined. And here we are, making it happen…
